After selling my SunSDR, I knew I still wanted to stick with an SDR radio. I like doing everything from the computer screen, and since I’m a software guy, open source was a big deal for me. Instead of going with something like a FlexRadio or Apache Labs setup, I decided to try the Hermes Lite 2.

For around $400, I was able to put together an open-source SDR setup using the Hermes Lite 2, the optional filter board, and Thetis SDR software. In this video, I unbox it, assemble the case, add thermal paste for better heat transfer, get it powered up, and take a first look at some of the features inside Thetis.
