There’s a lot of comment about this adjustment on the internet and the general thinking is the procedure in the manual will result in too high a setting. If the setting is too high, there will be unnecessary noise amplified from the IF circuits and weak signals may be ‘covered over’ by the noise. But setting too low will reduce the radio’s sensitivity. The procedure requires equipment that many R390A owners may not have. Ultimately it’s about the signal to noise ratio balanced against sensitivity. It’s all quite subtle to the ear. So I take a decidedly empirical approach to finding the optimal setting of R519 (for my radio). From my observations for my radio, above 3/4 turn is too high. Anywhere below that is OK although it might be best to stay above 1/4 turn. Have fun with your radio!
